Princeton Area Community Foundation Stragetic Planning for Meaningful Impact
In March 2022, The Princeton Area Community Foundation (The Community Foundation), a philanthropic organization located in Mercer County, New Jersey, engaged with YRM Consulting Group, in partnership with the Support Center, to guide their strategic planning process, including where and how The Community Foundation prioritizes diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
Over a twelve-month period, the YRM Consulting and Support Center consultant team stewarded and was a thought partner to the The Community Foundation Board of Trustees’ Strategic Planning Steering Committee, with the support of the President and CEO and staff.
The consultant team navigated the Steering Committee, CEO, and staff through three primary phases of work: (1) discovery and analysis, (2) the writing of the plan, and after its adoption by the board, (3) implementation guidance.
The project produced a three-year strategic plan with one overarching goal, “To Achieve Meaningful Impact In Our Targeted Geography”, and four interdependent asset-building and community-impact objectives.
The discovery process included an internal documents review, surveys with grantees, community partners, board members, and staff; key informant and peer interviews and focus groups; and an exploration of secondary data sources to develop a landscape scan of local and national philanthropic trends and needs.
After a preliminary analysis of the discovery findings, the Board of Trustees participated in a consultant facilitated retreat to identify strategic priorities and goals. Following the retreat, the priorities and goals were further developed in partnership with CEO and the Steering Committee. Writing the plan was a co-creative process. The final plan was presented to the board for adoption, after which, the consultants met with the CEO and staff to offer implementation guidance.
Established in 1991, the Princeton Area Community Foundation has long been committed to being a partner with philanthropists and nonprofits working to affect the social good of the Greater Mercer County community. The Community Foundation embraces a bold and proactive philanthropic approach to its role, resources, and support for community responses to persistent and emerging issues. Leading with strategic intention, either out in front through convening and advocacy with partners or quietly from behind through seeding innovation and investing in scalable solutions. The Community Foundation takes a long-term view on how to facilitate progress on complex problems stemming from intersecting issues.
